ALSF PROJECTS AWARDED TO MESL
2005-2007:
Round two of the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) has been
allocated to the Marine Environment Protection Fund (MEPF) for
further work specifically related to the marine environment and
aggregate extraction. CEFAS has been responsible for distributing
this fund to specific areas of research and development. MESL have
been awarded and are participating in the following projects:
MEPF 04/02 Predictive Framework for
Assessment of Marine Benthic Communities Following Cessation of
Marine Aggregate Extraction An innovative approach for
predicting the rate of restoration of benthic communities prior to
dredging or other anthropogenic disturbance. This will be achieved
through integration of population dynamics, life history traits and
multivariate community analysis.
MEPF 04/05 Marine ALSF Science
Co-ordinator Reporting directly to DEFRA, Dr. Richard
Newell has been appointed to co-ordinate all marine related ALSF
projects.
MEPF 04/01 Eastern English Channel Large
Scale Seabed Habitat Mapping Awarded to the British Geological
Survey and in collaboration with CEFAS, the JNCC and MESL.
MEPF 04/04 Improvements to Predictive
Modelling Awarded to ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd
in collaboration with MESL.

JUNE 2005:MESL have recently published a paper in Marine
Environmental Research (60,2005), entitled 'Impacts of
Aggregate Dredging on Sediment Composition and Associated Benthic
Fauna at an Offshore Dredge Site in the Southern North Sea'. See
Recent Publications.
MARCH 2004 : MES completed
a research project entitled"Impacts of Overboard
Screening on Seabed and Associated Benthic Biological Community
Structure In Relation to Marine Aggregate Extraction ",and
was prepared for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). The
project was funded by The Sustainable Land-Won & Marine Dredged
Aggregate Minerals programme, (grant No. SAMP.1.022.) and also
through MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation). A
Non-Technical Summary of the full Report can be downloaded HERE. Alternatively contact us via email
or phone for a fully interactive, electronic version of the report. A
full printed copy can be obtained at a cost of £10.00.
Other recent publications include a paper in the Journal of
Coastal Research (Winter 2004), entitled 'Impacts of Marine
Dredging on Benthic Macrofauna off the South Coast of the United
Kingdom' See Downloads.
